THE STANLEY CUP PROJECT IS THE WINNING PROPOSAL OF LSMMI‘S NATIONAL PUBLIC ART COMPETITION FOR THE DESIGN OF A MONUMENT CELEBRATING THE 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE STANLEY CUP.

DESCRIPTION:
The Stanley Cup model is a scaled-down representation of the team Covit/Nguyen/NORR proposal. It was manufactured in August 2016 to accompany the presentation documents at the jury. The design of this project was strongly regulated by the rules of the contest. The specified the size of the model base at 12 x 36 inch and the scale of representation at 1:10. Maquette.ca made the whole model in its workshop apart from the metal cup. The production of the cup in steel required a particular artisanal expertise and was done in collaboration with the Montreal sculptor Michel Bernier.
First, the base of the project was made in Russian birch plywood with integrated colored LED lamps. Then, the ground designed to resemble an ice rink was made with a painted and perforated styrene plate to allow recessed spotlights to illuminate the metal structure of the cup. Blue lighting has also been incorporated under the hockey puck shaped bench. Finally, given the large scale of the model, two white acrylic characters were handcrafted to give the jury a better appreciation of the project’s size. In conclusion, the execution lasted four weeks and the final height of the model was 12 inches.
The mandate was completed with a plywood transport crate and sample box that were custom designed to ensure the safe transport of the model. The jury was taking place in Ottawa so model had to be moved for the presentation. The winners were announced in November 2016 and the construction of the monument began in March 2017.
