Road Signal for Montreal-Trudeau International Airport

DESCRIPTION:
This model represents the signal project for the Montreal-Trudeau International Airport. It is located at the intersection of highways 13 and 520 in the Dorval neighborhood of Montreal. This project by architecture firm Pelletier de Fontenay aims to be a signaling light at the motorway entrance of the airport. The model was made in 2015 and its fabrication lasted a week. Its approximate dimensions are 10 x 14 inches for an overall height of 12 inches.
The model, all elements of which are fixed, was made at a scale of 1:300. This scale is well suited to a contemporary project with a minimalist aesthetic. First, the challenge for making this model was the stress management inside the materials to represent the desired twisted effect. In order to prevent the material from returning to its flat shape, a series of wood sticks was worked to embed the tabs that make up the envelope of the signal.
Therefore,the strategy has been to build a sanded clear acrylic prism that expresses the basic structure of the signage element. Then, the envelope made of twisted metal strips was represented with black cardboard for its high malleability, the twisting of the strips could not be performed in a too rigid material. The lettering has been scaled thanks to clear self-adhesive acetate prints.
The prism was installed on to a wooden base made of linden wood with LED lighting from below. Afterwards the model was covered by a protective case in clear acrylic.
