DESCRIPTION:

This project brings together five large-scale models retracing the evolution of the Pointe-à-Callière museum site in Montreal between the 14th and 19th centuries. From the native occupation to the expansion of the city in the 19th century, including the development of the village that Montreal was at the time. The models are realistic and include all the archaeological and anthropological knowledge related to the different eras. They are now installed and visible in the floors of the museum basement in a permanent exposition. The first model was produced on a scale of 1:50 to reflect the life scenes of the figures in clay, handmade, in accordance with knowledge of the time.
The following four models have been represented at 1: 100 to account for the historical evolution of life in the district since the arrival of the first Europeans.

As all the models were commissioned by the museum, it was therefore necessary to pay great attention to the conformity of the representation with the historical data. This concerns not only the illustration of scenes of life, the appearance of buildings, animals, but also of natural spaces.
In particular, it was necessary to respect the aspect of the water and the direction of the current, as well as the vegetation present at the time in order to represent the various scenes in a realistic way, from falling of trees, fishing, drying of salmon, hunting, to construction of buildings to the ornated architecture we now recognize as old Montreal.

SAINTE-CATHERINE – A CONDO TOWER PROJECT IN THE HEART OF MONTREAL

OVERVIEW:

Completion date: 2020
Completion time: 3 weeks
Scale: 1:87
Dimensions: 16” x 16” x 28”
Materials: Acrylic | MDF base

DESCRIPTION:

The condo tower project is located in Montreal, on Sainte-Catherine shopping street, in the heart of the city. The model produced in 2020 enriches a personal collection. His execution lasted 3 weeks. Its overall dimensions are approximately 16 “x 16″ for a height of 28”.
The model was completed at a scale of 1:87. This scale allows you to enter a precise and rich level of detail, while allowing the representation and understanding of the concept of the project as a whole. The major challenge was to transcribe the two architectural principles of the project, particularly the large glass curtain facades in the upper residential part, and the commercial base in the lower part. It was therefore necessary to think of the realization of the upper part with the fewest possible joints, to work the assembly of the floors with these continuous facades while considering the staggering of the floors in order to best represent the concept.
The whole model is monochrome and was made in acrylic, white for the opaque elements, and sandblasted transparent to create the translucent aspect of the tower’s glazing. All the elements were first drawn digitally then engraved and cut by laser cutter before being manually assembled.
The tower is placed on a base representing, the immediate urban context. Everything is protected by a transparent acrylic cover. The model is built on a base of MDF on which the urban context is expressed through styrene and the integration of characters. The lighting is centrally positioned throughout the height of the tower so that it is evenly illuminated.

DESCRIPTION:

This historic project represents Fort Ville-Marie in 1660. The model is realistic and includes all the archaeological and anthropological knowledge related to the period. It is now installed and visible at the Pointe-à-Callière museum in Montreal.
The model was produced on a scale of 1/60 in order to represent the structure of the fort and its surrounding environment. It also integrates the elements of the daily life of the community both inside and outside the fortifications.

The model having been commissioned by the museum, it was therefore necessary to pay great attention to the conformity of the representation with the historical data. This not only applies to the illustration of scenes of life, the appearance of buildings, animals, people but also of the landscape and natural spaces.
In particular, it was necessary to respect the aspect of the water and the direction of the current, as well as the vegetation present at the time in order to recreate the various scenes in a realistic way (the falling of trees, the cultivation of the fields, the passage of the carts).
The result of all these details is a model of very large dimensions (12 ′ x 20 ′).

Point Zéro – Real Estate Project in Downtown Montreal

PRESENTATION MODEL FOR THE PROJECT OF A NEW POINT-ZÉRO TOWER IN MONTREAL’S DOWNTOWN AREA.

OVERVIEW:

Date of completion : 2012
Time for completion : 3 to 4 weeks
Scale 1 :100
Dimensions : 24″ x 10″ x 38″
Materials : Linden wood | Acrylic | Russian Birch plywood

DESCRIPTION:

This model present the first iteration of the Point-Zéro tower project in Montreal. It is located in the downtown area at the corner of Bleury and René-Lévesque streets. This building dedicated to luxury condos and hotel was composed of an existing hotel on top of which was added an almond shaped tower. Karl Fischer Architect ordered this model in order to present the project’s development to Point-Zéro. The model was made in 2012 and its fabrication lasted between 8 to 10 weeks. Its overall dimensions are 20 x 10 inches for an overall height of 38 inches.

First, the model, all elements of which are fixed, is at a scale of 1:100. This scale makes it possible to precisely visualize how the the tower will establish it sell over the existing building. Despite the possibility of having a significant amount of detail at the chosen scale, this model is fairly basic and rather presents the essence of the project in its work of volumetry and composition of facades.

The main materials chosen for this model are molded acrylic which represents the glazed portions of the project and wood. Also, the acrylic was sandblasted to obstruct the view of the inside of the model that was not made in detail. The wood is presented gross and illustrates in a simplified way the structure and the envelope of the project as well as the neighboring building. In addition, the base has been made of a massive linden wood block and illustrates the topographic context in which the project is implemented.

Finally, the model is protected by a transparent acrylic case.

La Catherine Condominium - Maquette exposée au bureau de vente

La Catherine Condominiums by Groupe Gabriel

LA CATHERINE CONDOMINIUMS, REAL ESTATE PROJECT BY GROUPE GABRIEL DESIGNED BY FADI COUSSA ARCHITECT.

OVERVIEW:

Date of completion : 2014
Time for completion : 6 to 8 weeks
Scale 1 :100
Dimensions : 24″ x 30″ x 26″
Materials : Styrene | Acrylic | Linden wood | Russian birch plywood | Plants | LED lighting

DESCRIPTION:

The Catherine Condominiums project is located in downtown Montreal on Sainte-Catherine street between Fort and Lambert Closse streets. The architect Fadi Coussa commissioned this model to serve as a promotional tool in the sales office of the new development. It was made in 2014 and its execution lasted between 6 to 8 weeks. The models approximate dimensions were 24 x 30 inches for an overall height of 26 inches.

First, the scale of 1:100 allows you to see the details of the treatment of the facades and the layout of the site in its context. The model presents the immediate context treated in an abstract way in order to maintain the focus on the new building.  Two types of materials were chosen for this model. On the one hand, the styrene-type plastic, which constitutes the entire envelope, for its plastic qualities and its ability to transmit colors faithful to those of the construction. On the other hand, the acrylic was used in a translucent sanded version for glasing. Then, to give the model the most realistic appearance possible, the envelope is textured and painted to imitate the look of the materials constituting the facades. Linden wood and solid acrylic were also used to represent the context.

The model was built on a 1,5-inch-thick Russian birch plywood base on which the landscaping and urban context are expressed through painted styrene sheets and dried plants. It’s base also includes a bottom LED lighting system that lights the tower. The model is hollow to allow complete illumination from below.

The model is also protected by a transparent acrylic case. See the realized project at: La Catherine – Project.

Chalet à Sutton - Proposition A

Chalet in Sutton – Exploratory Models

EXPLORATORY MODELS FOR A CHALET PROJECT IN SUTTON BY ATELIER-S.

OVERVIEW:

Date of completion : 2015
Time for completion : 1 week
Scale 1 :200
Dimensions : 18″ x 10″ x 4″
Materials : Styrene | Acrylic | Russian Birch Plywood | Cherry wood | Linden Wood | White Cardboard

DESCRIPTION:

Chalet in Sutton is a project for a cottage in the Sutton region in the Eastern Townships. This model was developed for the architectural firm Atelier-S. It has been used for the development and demonstration of volumetric options available to the customer. It was manufactured in 2015 and its execution lasted about a week. Its approximate dimensions are 18 by 10 inches for an overall height of 4 inches.

The model is at a scale of 1:200, which allows a volumetric representation with a minimum of detail. First, the base was made with a piece of Russian birch plywood. Then, the ground was made by stacking sheets of white cardboard of thirty-second of an inch each representing a line of topographic level. The pile thus formed faithfully presents the slope of the site. Several iterations of the chalet were made with solid clear acrylic, linden and cherry wood and styrene. Thus, each iteration presents a different play on volumes with arrangements of colors and varied materials. It’s all about representing the essence of the concept that guided the design of each of the options in an efficient and quick way to appreciate their differences at first glance.

The various chalets have not been fixed to the base, allowing the use of the model to try different compositions of development and make it a tool for discussion with the client. The materiality of the small volumes was a game of orientation on the site in relation with the public and private spaces and with the topography of the site as well as the surrounding landscape.
